CJHS Attendance Support and Intervention Plan
Goal: 90%+ Attendance for All Students
Chronic Absenteeism Threshold: Any student below 80% attendance is considered chronically absent.
Overview
Regular attendance is essential for student success. At Cardston Junior High School, we are committed to supporting students and families in maintaining strong attendance habits. This plan outlines our tiered response to unexcused absences and low attendance, with increasing support and interventions at each level.
Tiered Attendance Response
Step 1: 3 Days Consecutive Unexcused Absence with No Contact to school
- A phone call will go home from a school EA to check on student.
Step 2: 6 Days Consecutive Unexcused Absence with No Contact
- A phone call will go home from a teacher to check on student and see what we can do to support and help student get caught up on missed work.
Step 3: 9–10 Days Consecutive Unexcused Absence with No Contact
- A mandatory meeting with administration is required.
Step 4: Less than 80% attendance
Starting in November, students with less than 80% attendance will receive:
- Weekly phone calls home from the school.
- A required meeting with administration to review barriers and discuss support strategies. (These meetings will happen monthly)
Focus of the meeting will be “What can we do to support your child in increasing their attendance?”
Athletic Requirements with Attendance
- Athletic Code of Conduct Requirement: Students must maintain minimum 90% attendance to remain eligible for school sports teams. Our preference would be 95% attendance.
- If students make a team and fall below the threshold of attendance there will be a required meeting with admin. Students will be ineligible to play if attendance requirements are not being met.
**We recognize that extenuating circumstances may arise from time to time, and in those cases, we are committed to working with families to provide appropriate support. These situations are considered exceptions, not the norm.
