Monthly Awards

Each month, we celebrate students who demonstrate positive character and contribute to our school community:

Student of the Month

  • One student per grade is selected by their grade-level teachers.
  • Teachers look for qualities such as hard work, kindness, helpfulness, and behaviors that contribute to a positive classroom learning environment.

Kindness Award

  • One student per grade is selected by their peers.
  • Students nominate classmates who demonstrate kindness. The student with the most nominations is chosen by Administration.

Year End Awards

At the end of the school year, we come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. We recognize achievement in many areas, including academics, attendance, athletics, and personal growth. The following awards are presented annually.

Principal Honor Roll - All students

  • 90% or higher in four of:
    • Math
    • Science
    • Social
    • LA
    • PE
  • Minimum of 85% or higher in the fifth class.
  • Semester 1 and Semester 2

Attendance Award - All Students

  • Students with 95%+ attendance will receive a certificate
  • Students with 99%+ attendance will receive a certificate and a gift
  • Students with 100% attendance will receive a certificate, gift, and monetary award

EA Recognition Award - up to three students in any grade

  • $200 each
  • This award honors students who demonstrate empathy, a strong commitment to their learning, and a genuine desire to uplift others. They will offer help without being asked, encourage their peers, and lead with patience and compassion. With a growth mindset, they face challenges head-on and persevere with determination and hard work.
  • These students are not only dedicated to their own success but also to the success of those around them. They help make our school community strong

Cam Williams Memorial Award - Grade 6 Student

  • $200
  • Mr. Cam Williams was privileged to teach grade six at the Cardston Elementary School from 1999-2007.  He is fondly remembered by students and staff as a fun, energetic teacher, who cared deeply about his students and colleagues.  The Cam Williams Memorial Award is an annual award, which recognizes a chosen grade six student.  This student exemplifies qualities that make for a positive school environment as well as a student who stands for good among his/her peers. Just as Mr. Williams brought character, respect, and integrity to his classes, the chosen student demonstrates similar qualities, as well as exhibits determination and effort in academics, shows kindness and respect to all peers regardless of race, social standing, or intellect, and quietly goes about making life easier for others.  In recognition of this Grade 6 student’s achievement and strong character, they will receive a plaque and a cash prize.

Ron Dittmann Award - Grade 7 Student

  • $200
  • Mr. Ron Dittmann was privileged to teach at Cardston Jr. High for over 30 years. He is fondly remembered by students and staff as a fun teacher who cared deeply about his students and colleagues. The Ron Dittmann scholarship is an annual award, which recognizes a chosen grade seven student.  This student exemplifies qualities that make for a positive school environment by building relationships with their peers. In recognition of this student’s achievement and strong character, one Grade 7 student will receive a plaque and a cash prize.

Cougar Award - Grade 8 Student

  • $200
  • This recipient of the Cougar award is a responsible, caring, kind, and attentive student. They have exemplary behavior in class as well as during extracurricular events and activities. They are a positive role model and they reach out to those who are struggling. They are involved within the school in various ways and they help in general wherever needed. They don't fall into peer pressure and they lead by example.

Harriett Heavy Runner Award - Grade 8 Student

  • $200
  • Harriet Heavy Runner was an excellent educator because she reached out to all students and touched their souls. She always encouraged the students she taught to be kind and to learn about their language and culture. She believes that for students to be successful they need to know who they are and where they come from. This award will be presented to an outstanding Grade 8 Native Student in our school who exemplifies the characteristics of Harriet. They strive to learn and live their culture and are kind to all those around them regardless of differences they may have.

Kath Hnidan Memorial Award - Grade 7 or 8 Students

  • $200
  • Kath Hnidan was a teacher at Cardston Junior High for her entire 32 years of teaching.  She taught physical education to Grade 7-9 students, coaching volleyball, basketball and track and field every year.  Ms. Hnidan was also involved in community activities; Cardston Community theatre and High School Football for 25 years. Comments from former students remember her as inspirational, supportive, encouraging, kind, inclusive, respectful to all, humble and a great listener. Former colleagues remember her as a student advocate, understanding and passionate, who seldom said no to any task thrown her way. The Kath Hnidan Memorial award is given to a student in Grade 7 or 8 who is involved in school and community activities in a volunteer and/or participant capacity.  The name of this memorial award is named “The Helping Hand” award.  Students should exemplify the characteristics Ms. Hnidan was recognized for.

Athletic Sportsmanship Awards

  • This award is not about being the top scorer or the fastest on the team—it's about character. Coaches are asked to nominate one or two athletes who consistently demonstrate sportsmanship, leadership, respect, and a positive influence both on and off the field. These students lead by example, support their teammates, and represent our school with integrity and pride. 

Male and Female Athlete of the Year - Grade 8 (one male and one female)

  • $200 to each recipient
  • Each year a Grade 8 Male & Female student is chosen as the male athlete of the year through coach and admin recommendations. This student is someone who contributed to several different athletic teams or events (school or community). They demonstrate good sportsmanship, leadership, respect, and global citizenship. They attend classes regularly and recognize the importance of academics and completing work in class.

Performing Arts Award - Grade 8 Student

  • $200
  • The CJHS Performing Arts Award goes to a grade 8 student who has demonstrated hard work, determination, and passion in their time in Band and/or Drama this year. They are a leader and a positive role model for both Band and/or Drama, and strive for excellence in both performing arts and academics.

Kindness Award - Grade 8 Student

  • $200 (up to two recipients may be chosen)
  • The Kindness Award is presented to a Grade 8 student who exemplifies compassion and empathy in their daily interactions. This award honors a student who consistently demonstrates kindness and respect towards others, positively impacting the school community and inspiring their peers to follow their example. Their commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment makes them a role model for all.
